06.29.2005 Misery Signals/18 visions/He is legend/Cry of the afflicted/a crows glory

didn't see the first 2 bands.

he is legend was pretty fun. arrived just in time to see them. lead singer still has a huge hobo beared. they played about 30 min. ended w/ i am hollywood, which bad a little thing at the end where they played stp's dead and bloated. kinda cool. cuz it share the same I am in the lyrics.

18 visions.... painful to watch....

misery signals. they were alright. made up for having to watch 18v. they've got sort of a stripped down DEP stage light setup going. flashy. vocals kept cutting out for the singer. real annoying. when he switched mics, it was really crackly. bad equipment on the venue's part. bless you hxc kids. i spent 1/2 the time watching the hxc kid antics.

i'll pass

bailed on PGMG. negatives outweighed the positives. last negative tipping the scales is the rain that's happening right now. oh well.

06.24.2005 Bane/Evergreen Terrace/Cursed/Verse/Rise to the Fall

RTTF was the local opener. kind of generic punk/hxc/metal sound going for them. they don't really stand out at all.

Verse, above average standard hardcore band. they were alright.

Cursed, seen them twice now. put on an ok set. i'm still having a hard time really getting into them.

Evergreen Terrace. looks like not too many people knew who they were or cared for that matter. i saw more ppl moving for verse than ET. but i thought they were alright. they've got a slightly heavier emo-core thing going for them. they seem to do alright. i liked what i saw.

Bane. wow. this was the best hardcore show i've seen in vancouver since i saw DEP in 2k4. the large stage of wise hall probably helped. still not as wild as the crowds i saw for terror in the states, but crazy none the less. i don't know how long bane normally plays for (before today i was thinking standard 25min hxc set), but this time everyone got their money's worth. they played 55 min, with an encore. a true encore at that, mics were turned off and house music came on after they played everyone's favorite 'can we start again?' aaron asked everyone if they wanted to hear ante up or both guns blazing. the correct answer to those types of questions is always both. and they did.

06.14.05 dredg/circa survive/pale pacific

late night driving from seattle->portland. pretty much left right after dredg and drove to portland. thank you criuse control. scariest thing happend while exiting the I205, due to it being dark, i could only see about 20 m ahead of me. well i didn't have time to swereve out of the way of fender in the middle of the road. i thought my tires would be blown for sure, or maybe i punctured one of the tanks. luckily nothing. the 'teg is built like a tank!

pale pacific and circa were ok. i'm still not overly impressed with them. found rodney before the show. got plugged in the board no problems. unfortuneately it appears the signal was too hot for the m1 to handle. came out with a lot of static despite having safe levels. :(((((((((((((((

dredg was awesome yet again. kept to the same setlist, but shuffled up the songs. the portland crowd sucks. they'll mosh for anything. at the end of yata, they did a similar jam thing like in seattle. they teased crosswind minuet this time. yeah *drops jaw.* drum take down was a pleasant suprise. dino stayed at the end and played a little piano ditty. pretty cool.

tried out my wide angle lense. it appears it has a hard time handling spot lights. the glare is pretty nasty.

06.13.05 dredg/circa survive/pale pacific

drive down to seattle was nice. avoided rush hour and was able to find a lot to park. found alienbobz in the lineup. he was the only one with a stand. noticed a few days before hand that house of blues was putting on this show. better than no promoter i guess. el corazon has a standard sign on their entrance:

i guess the cat has no claws when dredg plays. elcorazon is a stupid venue. beams everywhere obstructing views. there's even a support beam on stage. alienbobz set up his stand in the center of the room like a stone cold pimp. he ran ADK A-51 TL's > Oade WMod Edirol UA-5 > Creative Nomad Jukebox 3. also met another taper there, jim. he was running sp-cmc6>bb>some md. we all clipped to the stand.

pale pacific, not really my thing. kinda emo rocky. circa survive played next for about 30min. not really a fan either, but will admit their singer is kinda funny. his intro consisted of him being dragged to the stage, propped up by a stage hand, like he was half conscious/drunk. they had technical difficulties mid set resulting in the singer doing a solo song.

dredg. awesome set. at the end of yatahaze they went of into a small jam, teasing same ol' road and of the room.

06.05.05 Against Me!/Murder By Death/Kytami and Blackie

overall a pretty lacklustre day booting wise. got permission from alex of mbd to tape off the sbd. man he's tall. even sitting down. not hard to spot at all. apparently i was the first to ever try taping them from the board. he had to quickly ask matt to establish a policy. wonderful. a short 5 second convo got an ok. not a lot learned from talking w/ alex. they don't have any immediate fill ins for keyboardists so sara will keep pulling double duty. the last keyboardist was dropped because he just wasn't ready to fill in. i'm kinda hoping they just get vincent back after he graduates. they're hitting the studio in august to write more songs. on to the show...

got to the board to find someone already plugged in. hmmm. nope. not competition, just some guy who wanted to tape his buddy in the opening band i guess. mesa keeps switching soundmen on me. this only has outs with a mono-mix. blah.. he even mixed me in a minute late.

blackie and kytami were kinda neat sounding. band consisted a violinist, drummer and acoustic guitarist. not bad.

mbd was a 3 piece this night. an hour before their set time, sara "fell down some stairs and busted her hand." interesting seeing the band in this light. but disappointing overall. dare i say it, they were kind of average. they played like 25 min? *sigh* . adam played a sonny bono song solo to end the night. "bang "bang". you'll recognize it if you've seen kill bill.

against me!, man they've got a house party vibe to them. crazy!! people were really into them. it felt like a hardcore show with people singing along. and they're not even hardcore at all. mostly folky-punk. it was a free-for-all stage wise. people literally sitting on stage (and blocking my view). at the end everyone rushed the stage and circled the band. i'm thinking of re-using the tape.

oooo. side note. ran the dpas for the first time tonight. they sound awesome. and i wasn't even trying to get a good position audio wise. bass roll off wasn't even needed. i'm gonna set it waaaaay lower next time.

ben harper vs. vans warped tour

just noticed ben harper being ont he same day as warped tour. this could make for an interesting day. with a relatively shitty warped tour lineup, i should be out of there by 9 ish. no offspring and no used for moi.

bands i wouldn't mind seeing (read: worth 30min on a DAT tape):
mcr, strung out, dropkick murphys (barely), thrice, billy talent, alexisonfire (reluctantly), avenged sevenfold (reluctantly), atreyu (reluctantly), reggie and the full effect, strike anywhere, emery (maybe), hopesfall. the ones in italics, i wouldn't think twice about taping. hmm about 6 hours max. not bad that'll fit on 2 tapes.

not really a fan of 'harps, but if the 'ol #1 in the NW doesn't represent who'll step up?

might be a little tight though.

doors for bh is at 8, support 9, support will prolly play 30min or so, 15 min to setup, so ben will probably on at 9:45-10:00. i'm guess probably closer to 10 cuz curfew is at 1. he'll prlly play 2h30-3h. which means if i want to see both i'd have to leave t-bird by about 8:45. and i know i won't be seeing offspring, so that's an hour down. interesting...
